What Sets Our Kindergarten Apart

At Harvey Browne, our Kindergarten program is rooted in a strong foundation of social-emotional learning, ensuring that children feel confident, valued, and supported. Key features that make our Kindergarten unique include:

  • A developmentally appropriate approach that honors each child’s readiness and growth

  • Small group sizes with a 7:1 lead teacher-to-student ratio

  • Thematic and emergent curriculum that encourages creativity and exploration

  • Daily transitions to build independence and responsibility

  • Hands-on learning based on the KY Academic Kindergarten Standards

A Gradual Transition to Full Days

Our program eases children into full-day learning to help them adapt comfortably. Beginning in October, the Kangaroos stay until 3:00 p.m. on Thursdays, and in January, they stay until 3:00 p.m. on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, with three half-days on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This gradual schedule helps children adjust to the extended hours and enjoy extra time for activities like lunch, creative movement, music, and enrichment.

Optional Literacy Enrichment

For additional support in literacy, Kangaroos can participate in our LAB (Literacy Above and Beyond) program on Wednesday afternoons. This enrichment opportunity allows students to further develop their reading and comprehension skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Click here to download the registration form.

Reading Room

In the Reading Room, children dive into literature through interactive and experiential activities. Emphasis is placed on reading comprehension, early reading strategies, and fostering a love for books. Each child is supported at their own reading level, helping them build confidence and enthusiasm for lifelong reading.

Centers & Snack Room

This room provides a mid-morning break, allowing children to enjoy self-serve snacks and engage in imaginative play. Various centers, such as housekeeping, blocks, puzzles, science, and woodworking, encourage creativity and social interaction, giving children a space to explore their interests and build social skills.

Math Room

Here, children experience math in an enjoyable, hands-on way. Activities include calendar math, interactive games, math centers, and a curriculum designed to make learning numbers and patterns fun. This room fosters a positive attitude towards math, encouraging problem-solving skills and curiosity.

Afternoon & Music

On full days, Kindergarteners have the opportunity to engage in music and creative movement activities. These sessions include rhythm exercises, coordinated movements, and musical exploration, allowing children to develop both their motor skills and an appreciation for the arts. Afternoons are filled with enriching experiences that balance active play with creative expression, rounding out a well-rounded kindergarten day.

Rotational Learning

Every morning, the Kindergarten Kangaroos rotate through three engaging learning spaces, each focused on specific skill development and fun, hands-on activities. These classes are led by our experienced and passionate educators who create a welcoming and enriching experience for all students.

The Kindergarten Kangaroos

Our Kindergarten program, known as the Kangaroos, is designed to provide a well-rounded, developmentally appropriate experience for five-year-olds.

As the "big kids" at Harvey Browne Preschool, the Kangaroos enjoy a fun and engaging environment that balances academic learning with social-emotional growth and creative play.
